A Hot Tip for Colds & Flu

Fresh apple, ginger and lemon juice mixed with hot water, sweetened with a spoonful of Manuka active honey is a must for cold winter days, even if you don’t have a cold.

Instructions: Juice the apple, ginger and lemon (leave the peel on). Pour the juice into your favorite mug. Make sure you onle half fill the mug and then top up with hot (not boiling) water from the kettle. Add the Manuka honey and stir well. Mmmh.

The health benefits: Manuka honey is different from other honeys in that it contains an extra, naturally occuring active ingredient known as Methylglyoxal, which is its dominant antibacterial constituent. The antiviral and antibacterial actions can be very useful with colds and sore thoats. Ginger is nature’s super root and seemingly fights almost every common aliment. Ginger is known to be effective for the treatment of cataracts, amenorrhoea, heart disease, migraines, stroke, angina, athlete’s foot, colds, bursitis, chronic fatigue, tendinitis, flu, coughs, depression, dizziness, fever, erectile difficulties, infertility, kidney stones, Raynaud’s disease, sciatica, viral infections and the list goes on and on… Lemon juice is very high in citric acid, which has been documented over the years as helping the body fight off colds. It’s also a liver stimulant and can control irritable bowel syndrome and regulate constipation and diarrhoea. It can also help heartburn, bloating, and gas. As lemon juice contains calcium, it’s alos good for your bones and teeth and its magnesium content will also help with colds and fevers too. All of which is perfect if you are lying in bed and feel like you’ve just been run over by a truck.
